I exclusively use natural dyes in my work (like the indigo & shibori kit below) but they do have a bit of a learning curve. Here are some synthetic dyes that can be used to dye cotton.

Recommended supplies & equipment for making botanical watercolor paint

Alum & Soda Ash

These are used to extract pigment from the dye liquid.
Jacquard is a very respectable brand that makes dyes and related supplies.

Equipment

These are ready-made binders.
Schmincke is the one I use in the class but many watercolor makers also like Sennelier.
